Description:
Sitting atop a horse at the head of the march, one of the Naga Sadhu’s older members shouts, "Her Her Mahadev…Her Her Mahadev”. “Her Her Mahadev", meaning, “we are all Shiva”, the huge crowd unanimously responds. At about four in the morning the procession for the royal bath, the Shahi Snan, one of the highlights of the Kumbh Mela, goes off. In ancient times, according to tradition, the holy men of the orders were compelled to slay people as part of their mission to protect the dharma, the true way of life. Immersing in the holy Ganges was therefore a way for them to wash away their sins.
