Hindu Pilgrims arriving at Allahabad

Description:

The festival’s timing is determined by the Hindu calendar, which is influenced by the position of the sun, the moon and Jupiter. During a period of 12 years, each location hosts the Mela at least once. However, the intervals in between are not standard. In addition to the large mass gathering called ‘Maha Kumbh Mela’, Allahabad and Haridwar host a smaller gathering called ‘Ardh Kumbh Mela’ (Half Kumbh Mela), once every six years. In fact, within a space of twelve years, six gatherings are held. These include four large and two small events, all taking place in the four holy cities, but at various intervals.
